Iceland road conditions: how to check before you drive

No page can tell you if a road is open today, and this one does not try. Three services do that job. Use umferdin.is for the road status, safetravel.is for travel advice and en.vedur.is for the weather. Check all three before every longer drive, in every season.

What this page can do is explain the seasons. The Ring Road, the mountain roads and the tires you need follow a yearly pattern. If you know the pattern, you can choose a month that fits your car, your experience and your plan.

Iceland ring road in winter

Many travelers drive it, but it needs more time and a flexible plan.

Time buffer

Ice, wind and little daylight slow you down. Leave margin on every leg and do not plan long drives after dark.

Four-wheel drive

Four-wheel drive does not stop a car from sliding. The vehicle and its winter equipment must fit your route.

Winter tires

The safety service asks for winter equipment that fits the trip, including winter tires. Studded tires are listed by the City of Reykjavík for 1 November to 15 April, and one rental company gives 14 April. Studded tires are not the same as ordinary winter tires, and there are weather-related exceptions outside the season.

Warnings

Weather warnings use colors. Yellow means potentially dangerous weather with local effects. Orange means considerable possible effects on traffic and infrastructure. Red means extreme danger with strong effects on society. The color reflects likelihood and expected impact, so there is no single wind limit for every rental car.

The south coast

Short winter days and slick roads affect the south coast plans. At Reynisfjara, dangerous weather and high waves can limit access to the viewpoint only. The beach safety page of the safety service shows the current status, and its notices apply even when the wave level is not red.

Northern lights drives

If you chase the lights by car, plan for ice and wind, and keep the drive short. The northern lights guide explains the forecast.

F-roads, river crossings and rental cars

F-roads are marked highland roads. A rental car may use one only if the company has approved the vehicle for that exact route. Not every four-wheel drive is a highland vehicle, and some routes are beyond even the largest rental vehicles. Driving off the marked road is forbidden.

Water level and current at river crossings change, so turn back if you doubt it. The safety service warns that insurance may not cover river crossings. Rental firms and the safety service give different season dates for F-roads, from early June to the end of September in one case, and usually closed from mid-September to June or July in the other. There is no single season. Check the current status of your route, and see the summer guide for the historical opening dates from 2021 to 2025.

Opening dates in the table of that guide are history. A booked parking space at Landmannalaugar or a running summer bus does not prove that the road is open.

Tolls, charges and the volcano on Reykjanes

The Ring Road is not toll-free any more, and the situation near the airport has a date on it.

Toll at Hornafjörður

The new Ring Road section opened on 25 June 2026. Since 1 September 2026 a toll applies: 1,500 ISK for vehicles under 3.5 t, 2,100 ISK for 3.5 to 7.5 t and 4,500 ISK above 7.5 t. Cameras record the passage, and you pay within 24 hours of passing. Ask your rental company how it handles tolls.

Kilometer charge

Since 1 January 2026, every drive type pays 6.95 ISK per km for cars and jeeps up to 3.5 t. Rental companies may add their own surcharges.

Reykjanes, status of 30 September 2026

The Icelandic Met Office reported slow uplift at Svartsengi and low seismicity. It considered further magma movement toward Sundhnúkur the most likely development, and said it could not predict when an eruption might happen. Grindavík stayed in the orange class. Treat this as a dated report, not today's status. The Blue Lagoon names the Grindavíkurvegur, road 43, as its main access route and warns about outdated navigation routes.

Is the Ring Road free of tolls?

No. Since 1 September 2026 the new section at Hornafjörður charges 1,500 ISK for vehicles under 3.5 t.

What do yellow, orange and red warnings mean?

Yellow means potentially dangerous weather with local effects. Orange means considerable possible effects on traffic and infrastructure. Red means extreme danger with strong effects on society.
