The cheapest time to visit Iceland depends on what you buy
Hotels, rental cars, flights and tours each have their own prices, and each moves differently through the year. No public figure proves that one month is cheapest across the board. What the numbers do show is when the country is busy and when it is quiet. Use that to decide where to look first, and then compare quotes for the same dates and the same service.
Hotel room occupancy gives a clue. In January and December 2025 it was below 50 percent across the country, and in July and August it was especially high. That does not prove the lowest hotel price, and it says nothing about Christmas and New Year, which need their own check.

How busy Iceland is, month by month
Foreign passengers leaving through Keflavík in 2025, in rounded thousands. The labels compare each month with the August peak.
| Month 2025 | Foreign departures, approx. | Compared with the peak |
|---|---|---|
| January | 122,000 | Lowest |
| February | 149,000 | Low |
| March | 152,000 | Low |
| April | 149,000 | Low |
| May | 160,000 | Low |
| June | 234,000 | Higher |
| July | 302,000 | Peak |
| August | 313,000 | Peak |
| September | 224,000 | Higher |
| October | 201,000 | Higher |
| November | 142,000 | Low |
| December | 120,000 | Lowest |
These are counts of foreign passengers leaving, taken before the security check. They are not arrivals and not the number of people at a single sight. The figures were revised on 18 February 2026. June to August is clearly higher than the rest of the year, and September is still well visited. May and September count as shoulder months only compared with the summer peak. They do not promise empty sights.

How to compare the seasons
Choose the trip first, then the month.
November to May
These months had the fewest departures in 2025. You trade this for short days in winter, ice and wind, and the highlands are not open. Northern lights and ice caves belong to the winter part of this stretch. See the winter guide.
September and October
Traveler numbers are higher than in winter but below the summer peak. The highland season is ending, and early winter weather is possible. Check each route before you plan around it.
June to August
The highest numbers and the longest days. This is the time for highland trips, puffins and bright nights. Book rooms and tours early. The summer guide has the details.
Compare like with like
Get quotes for the same room type, the same car and the same tour on the same dates. Look at the full price including taxes, fees and cancellation terms.
Watch the extras
A longer drive means more kilometer charge. A winter trip may need more nights because of short days and weather. A summer trip may need earlier booking.
Match the region
Where you sleep matters as much as when. The where to stay page compares the regions by season.
Plan the rest of your trip
Prices follow the season, and the season follows what you want to see.
Cheapest time to visit Iceland: frequently asked questions
Which month is the cheapest in Iceland?
No public number proves a single cheapest month. November to May had the fewest departures in 2025, but fewer travelers do not by themselves prove lower prices. Compare quotes for your dates.
Is winter cheaper than summer?
Winter is quieter, and hotel occupancy in January and December 2025 was below 50 percent. Prices still depend on the hotel, the dates and the service. Winter also brings short days and weather risks.
Do May and September count as cheap months?
They are shoulder months only compared with the summer peak. September had about 224,000 departures in 2025, which is still well above winter.
What fees apply to a rental car in 2026?
A kilometer charge of 6.95 ISK per km for cars and jeeps up to 3.5 t applies since 1 January 2026, and the new Ring Road section at Hornafjörður costs 1,500 ISK per passage since 1 September 2026. Rental companies may add their own fees.
How much is the hotel tax?
800 ISK per room unit and night for hotels and guesthouses, and 400 ISK for a camper or campsite pitch. There is no separate charge per child.
