Iceland in June at a glance

June is the month of light. On 1 June the sun rises in Reykjavík at 03:23 and sets at 23:30. By 15 June it sets at 23:59 and rises at 02:57. The summer solstice fell on 21 June in 2026.

June suits first-time visitors who want long days, whale and puffin trips and the first chance at the interior. It does not suit anyone chasing the northern lights, because the sky does not get dark enough.

June weather in Iceland

Typical averages for 1991 to 2020 at two stations, rounded. Real Junes vary, and weather can change within a day.

StationDaily highDaily lowMonthly meanRain per month

June is the driest typical month of the year in Reykjavík, and Akureyri gets only about half as much rain as the capital. That does not mean dry days are guaranteed. Bring a rain jacket, a warm layer and a sleep mask for the bright nights. Compare June with other months on Iceland weather by month.

Midnight sun in June

The term needs care. In Reykjavík the sun goes below the horizon for about three hours around the solstice, so you get a long, bright twilight and no endless day. Continuous sun is a feature of Grímsey, an island on the Arctic Circle. A tourism source gives 7 June to 7 July for it.

Grímsey is reached by ferry from Dalvík in about three hours or by flight from Akureyri in about 30 minutes. Timetables change by season, so check the current schedule before you plan around a day trip. The wider story, with what to do at night, is on our midnight sun page.

The highlands in June

Highland roads open one at a time, depending on snow. Past dates are no promise for 2026. These are the 2025 openings and the earliest to latest dates in the records for 2021 to 2025.

So in the first half of June many roads are still closed. In the second half the first ones open. Only vehicles approved for the exact route may drive on F-roads, and leaving the road is forbidden. River crossings change with water level, and insurance may not cover them. If in doubt, turn around. Our road conditions guide covers the rules in detail.

Reservation window

For 2026 an arrival reservation was required from 20 June to 13 September, for arrivals between 09:00 and 16:00. Booking opened on 1 April. Outside those hours the vehicle fee still applies.

Fees

The 2026 vehicle fee was 1,500 ISK for cars up to five seats and 2,450 ISK for six to nine seats. No separate child rate is listed. Changes were possible until one week before arrival.

Without a car

The 2026 highland bus ran from 13 June to 20 September. It left Reykjavík BSÍ at 07:00, reached Landmannalaugar at 11:30, left again at 15:45 and returned at 19:30. A booked parking spot or bus seat does not prove that the road is open, so check road status first.

Wildlife, pools and the coast

June is inside the puffin season, which runs from May to mid August. The classic puffin boat from Reykjavík sails between 20 April and 20 August and takes about an hour. Whale watching runs all year in Reykjavík, and the offer is bigger in summer.

The Blue Lagoon is open 08:00 to 22:00 from 1 to 14 June and 07:00 to 23:00 from 15 June. The Jökulsárlón boat tours run 09:00 to 19:00 from June to September. The boat operator refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. See our Blue Lagoon page and Jökulsárlón.

Crowds in June

June is the first of the three peak months. About 234,000 foreign passengers left Keflavík in June 2025, compared with 160,000 in May. July and August were higher still. These counts cover departures from the airport, not visitors at one site. Book rental cars, accommodation and popular tours early, especially for the Golden Circle and the south coast.
