Which Iceland tours to book, and when
Some tours run all year, such as glacier walks, whale watching, the Golden Circle and the south coast. Others belong to one part of the year: northern lights in the dark months, puffins in summer, ice caves from autumn and the highland bus in summer only. Choose the tour first, then check the dates.
The table gives a quick view of the main types. Prices are 2026 adult prices where a source gives them. A listed season is not a promise that a tour runs on your date, because weather and demand decide. Always read the terms of the tour you book.

Northern lights, ice caves, glacier walks, whale watching, the Golden Circle and the south coast, with live prices and availability.
Golden Circle tours
The classic day out from Reykjavík.
The Golden Circle links Þingvellir, the Geysir area with the Strokkur geyser and Gullfoss on a loop of about 250 km from Reykjavík. It works all year. In summer you get long days. In winter you get snow scenery. The lower viewing paths at Gullfoss can close in ice and snow. Read the Golden Circle page for the details.
South coast tours
Waterfalls, black sand and glacier tongues.
The south coast is the stretch of about 480 km between Þorlákshöfn and Höfn, so ask where a tour turns around. Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Gljúfrabúi lie close to the Ring Road. Winter days are short and the paths can be icy, so a winter trip needs a time buffer. Guided glacier walks and their safety gear are booked separately. See the south coast page.
What to book in each season
Four seasons, four sets of tours.
Winter, November to March
Northern lights tours, glacier walks, Silfra, whale watching and the Golden Circle. Daylight is short, from about 4 hours in December to about 10 hours by early March in Reykjavík. Build time buffers into every day. See Iceland in winter.
Spring, April and May
The late northern lights window closes in April. Puffin boats start on 20 April, and whale watching continues. The highland bus has not started yet. See Iceland in April.
Summer, June to August
Puffins, whale watching, boat trips on Jökulsárlón and the highland bus to Landmannalaugar from 13 June 2026. Book early for July and August, the busiest months. See Iceland in summer.
Autumn, September and October
Northern lights tours return, the highland bus ends on 20 September 2026, and the first ice cave trips start on 1 October 2026 with one operator. See Iceland in October.
Before you book a tour
Four things that decide whether a tour fits.
Weather cancellations
If an operator cancels a tour for weather, rebooking or a refund is usually possible, but the terms differ by product. Read them before you pay.
No-sighting policies
Some northern lights and whale tours offer a repeat ticket rather than an automatic refund if nothing shows. Look for this in the terms.
What is included
Glacier and ice cave tours supply the guide and safety gear, while clothing, shoes and food are often your job. On the Jökulsárlón boats, the operator offers a full refund for cancellations up to 24 hours ahead.
Highland access
Reserved parking at Landmannalaugar does not mean the road is open. If you drive yourself, check the opening of each road and your rental contract, or take the highland bus. Plan with the road conditions page.
Iceland tours: frequently asked questions
When should I book Iceland tours?
Book in advance for July and August, the busiest months, and for tours that run on set dates such as the highland bus. In the winter months crowds are lower, but short days and weather still affect schedules.
What tours are available in winter?
Northern lights tours, glacier walks, Silfra snorkeling, whale watching, Golden Circle trips and, from autumn, ice cave tours. Check the operator's dates, because seasons differ between companies.
When do the ice cave tours start?
It depends on the operator. One company lists a 2026/27 start on 1 October 2026. There is no single national ice cave season, and the cave you visit can differ from last season's photos.
Can I join a northern lights tour in summer?
No. June is too bright, and the usual season runs from September to April. See the northern lights page for the conditions you need.
Is a Golden Circle tour better than driving myself?
A tour removes the driving and winter road worries. Driving yourself gives you freedom with timing. In both cases, check the weather and road conditions first.
