Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach at a glance
Jökulsárlón is a glacier lagoon with icebergs, and the black beach of Fellsfjara, known as Diamond Beach, lies on the other side of the Ring Road. The national park describes the area as reachable all year, with services that depend on the season. That is not a promise about road conditions on a given day, so check the weather and the road status before you set out.
The best time depends on what you want. Summer gives boats and long hours. Autumn brings ice cave tours and returning dark skies. Winter gives short days, ice on the beach and a chance of northern lights, which needs a clear, dark sky and is never guaranteed.

Best time to visit Jökulsárlón
Four moments in the year, and what each gives you.
| Month | Daylight in Reykjavík on the 1st | Typical high / low | What you can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| February | 7 h 07 min | 3 / -2 °C (37 / 28 °F) | Short days and ice on the beach. Dark nights for a northern lights attempt. No boat tours. |
| May | 16 h 51 min | 10 / 4 °C (50 / 39 °F) | Boat season opens, with a short day from 10:00 to 17:00. |
| July | 20 h 50 min | 15 / 9 °C (59 / 48 °F) | Full boat season and the longest light. Many visitors. |
| October | 11 h 20 min | 8 / 3 °C (46 / 37 °F) | Boats still run, ice cave season starts and the dark evenings return. |
Climate values are typical averages for Reykjavík (1991–2020), rounded to whole degrees. They are only a guide for the south-east coast, where conditions differ. Daylight runs from sunrise to sunset on the 1st of the month in 2026. For every month, see weather by month.
Pick summer if you want the boat and long light. Pick October or the weeks after for an ice cave and fewer visitors than the summer peak, with a good chance of dark evenings. Pick winter if you prefer the quiet of short days and accept a smaller plan. Read more in the guides to northern lights and summer.

Boat tours and 2026 prices
Prices are the operator's 2026 list. Check the current schedule and book ahead in the busy season.
| Tour | Duration | Season | Adults and ages 13+ | Children |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amphibious boat | 30 to 40 min | May to November | 7,100 ISK | 6 to 12 years 3,500 ISK, 0 to 5 years free |
| Zodiac boat | 1 h 15 min | May to October | 16,600 ISK | 10 to 12 years 8,300 ISK |
Groups of 12 or more pay 6,800 ISK per person on the amphibious boat. Operating hours are 10:00 to 17:00 in May, 09:00 to 19:00 from June to September, and 10:00 to 17:00 from October to 15 November. A last departure is not guaranteed. The operator offers a full refund for cancellations up to 24 hours before departure.
Ice caves: a season that moves
Ice cave tours do not follow one national season. One operator lists a start on 1 October 2026 for the 2026/2027 season, with a tour of 5 to 6 hours. The group meets at the main parking area at Jökulsárlón, and a transfer onto the glacier takes up to 40 minutes. Guide and equipment are included. Clothing, shoes and food are not.
Caves change from year to year. A cave visited in the 2025/2026 season has melted, according to the operator's current page. So photos and cave names are no promise of what you will see. Do not expect the same cave, the same color or a tour on a given day. The tour is not a self-guided activity, and you must never enter an ice cave on your own.

Walks at the lagoon and the beach
The park lists two marked paths. Path B1 at Jökulsárlón is 1.2 km (0.75 mi). Path B2 at Eystri-Fellsfjara is 1 km (0.6 mi). A visitor path leads under the Jökulsá bridges from the parking area at Eystri Fellsfjara. Check the condition of the paths on the day, because ice and weather change them.
The black beach is where chunks of ice wash up and glitter on the sand. How much ice you find varies by day and season, and nobody can promise an ice-filled beach. Wear shoes with grip, keep away from the waterline, and leave the ice where it is. If you visit after dark in the aurora season, take a torch and warm layers.

Getting there and what it costs on the road
The lagoon lies on the Ring Road. If you drive on towards Höfn, the new Ring Road section at Hornafjörður has been tolled since 1 September 2026, at 1,500 ISK per passage for a car under 3.5 t, with camera registration. A distance charge of 6.95 ISK per km also applies to cars up to 3.5 t since 1 January 2026, and rental companies add it in their own way.
In winter, the short daylight and ice make a rushed same-day return a poor plan. Look at the south coast guide for stops on the way, the road conditions page for what to check, and the itineraries for how many nights to give the trip.
