The Golden Circle at a glance
The Golden Circle is a loop of about 250 km (155 mi) from and back to Reykjavík. It links three stops: Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area with the geyser Strokkur, and the Gullfoss waterfall. It is a year-round route in principle, so there is no closed season to plan around.
The real length depends on where you start and on any detours you add. In winter, do not count on a fixed driving time. Ice, wind and short daylight can slow a day that looks simple on the map.

Best time to do the Golden Circle
There is a good time for every kind of trip. The stops stay the same, but the day feels very different by season.
| Month | Daylight in Reykjavík on the 1st | Typical high / low | What it means on the route |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 4 h 24 min | 3 / -2 °C (37 / 28 °F) | Snow and ice, late sunrise. Start late and be off the road before dark. |
| April | 13 h 33 min | 7 / 1 °C (45 / 34 °F) | Days lengthen fast. The Þingvellir visitor center is on its April to October hours. |
| July | 20 h 50 min | 15 / 9 °C (59 / 48 °F) | Almost round-the-clock light, the most visitors and the easiest driving. |
| October | 11 h 20 min | 8 / 3 °C (46 / 37 °F) | Autumn colors at Þingvellir. The dark evenings of the northern lights season return. |
Climate values are typical averages for Reykjavík (1991–2020), rounded to whole degrees. Daylight runs from sunrise to sunset on the 1st of the month in 2026. Real weather on a given day can differ a lot, so see our weather by month page.
Choose summer for light. Long days let you add stops, stay longer at each one and drive without watching the clock. Choose winter for snow-covered scenery and a possible evening outing for the northern lights, which depends on clear skies and gives no guarantee. Read the winter guide and the summer guide for the full picture.
Crowds follow the same curve. About 302,000 and 313,000 foreign passengers left through Keflavík in July and August 2025, against about 122,000 in January and 120,000 in December. That counts departing passengers, not people at the stops, but it shows how much busier summer is. See the cheapest time to visit for more on seasons and costs.

The three stops
Costs below are listed amounts for 2026 where a park or operator publishes them.
Þingvellir National Park
The park sits in a rift valley and is the usual first stop. Parking costs 1,000 ISK for a car with up to 5 seats and 1,200 ISK for 6 to 9 seats. A motorcycle pays 400 ISK. The daily fee covers the parking areas P1, P2 and P5. The visitor center Hakið is open from 09:00 to 18:00 from April to October and from 09:00 to 17:00 from November to March. The exhibition Heart of Iceland costs 1,200 ISK for adults, 600 ISK for seniors and for students from 18 years, and is free under 18.
Silfra at Þingvellir
Silfra is a fissure for snorkeling and diving, and tours run all year. The water is 2 to 4 °C, so divers need a dry suit. Nobody enters the water alone, and the maximum diving depth is 18 m. Weather and safety rules still apply, so a year-round tour is not a promise that it runs every day.
Geysir and Strokkur
The Geysir area is home to Strokkur, which erupts. Stay on the marked paths. Check the current parking arrangements and any fees on site, because they can change.
Gullfoss
Gullfoss is the third stop on the loop. In ice and snow the lower viewing paths can be closed. Follow the signs and the barriers, and expect a shorter visit on an icy day. The waterfall looks very different in the snow and with a rainbow in summer, which is a good reason to see it in more than one season.
Driving the loop in winter and summer
In winter, rent a car with proper winter tires and allow extra time. Four-wheel drive does not stop a car from sliding on ice. Check the road status and weather warnings from the Icelandic Road Administration and the Icelandic Met Office on the morning you leave, and be ready to change your plan. Yellow warnings mean potentially dangerous weather, orange means serious possible effects on traffic, and red means extreme danger.
In summer the road is easier, but parking areas fill up. Start early or late to avoid the middle of the day.
Rental cars carry a distance tax of 6.95 ISK per km since 1 January 2026 for cars up to 3.5 t. How a rental company passes this on differs, so ask when you pick up the car. For a longer route with more days, see the itineraries by season.

Golden Circle: frequently asked questions
How long is the Golden Circle?
The loop is about 250 km (155 mi) from and back to Reykjavík. The exact distance depends on your starting point and any detours, and winter conditions can make the day much longer.
What is the best time of year for the Golden Circle?
It works all year. Summer gives long daylight and the easiest driving. Winter gives snow and ice and a chance of an evening aurora trip, with shorter days and more risk of delays.
Is the Golden Circle open in winter?
It is a year-round route in principle. The lower viewing paths at Gullfoss can close in ice and snow, and roads can be affected by weather. Check road status and weather warnings before you leave.
What does parking at Þingvellir cost?
In 2026 a car with up to 5 seats pays 1,000 ISK and a car with 6 to 9 seats pays 1,200 ISK. The daily fee covers the parking areas P1, P2 and P5.
Can I see the northern lights on the Golden Circle?
The season runs roughly from September to April, and you need dark, at least partly clear skies. There is no guarantee on any night. Tours that go out in the evening can be a good option if you do not want to drive in the dark.
Can I snorkel in Silfra all year?
Tours are offered all year. The water is 2 to 4 °C, a buddy is required and diving needs the right qualification and health check. Tours can be canceled for weather or safety reasons.
