Iceland in August at a glance
August is the busiest month of the year. About 313,000 foreign passengers left Keflavík in August 2025, more than in any other month. It is also the month when summer begins to turn. In Reykjavík the day shrinks from 17 hours 56 minutes on 1 August to 16 hours 24 minutes on 15 August, and the aurora season starts around the end of the month or in September.
Choose August for warm typical temperatures, open roads in the lowlands, city events and the last weeks of the puffin season. Expect high demand and book ahead.

August weather in Iceland
Typical averages for 1991 to 2020 at two stations, rounded. Rain increases compared with June and July.
| Station | Daily high | Daily low | Monthly mean | Rain per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reykjavík | 14 °C (57 °F) | 9 °C (48 °F) | 11 °C (52 °F) | about 65 mm |
| Akureyri | 15 °C (59 °F) | 8 °C (46 °F) | 11 °C (52 °F) | about 41 mm |
The monthly mean is a little lower than in July, and August is wetter than July in both towns. The difference is small, so August still counts as warm for Iceland. Pack the same layers as for July, and add a headlamp or a flashlight for late evenings. The full picture is on Iceland weather by month.

Daylight in August
The change over the month is the story. Reykjavík, 2026.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 August | 04:34 | 22:31 | 17 h 56 min |
| 15 August | 05:18 | 21:43 | 16 h 24 min |
Daylight is still long, but you lose roughly 1.5 hours between the first and the middle of the month. The northern lights season runs from September, and one source gives late August as its start. The sky in the first half of August is too light to expect an aurora. Read our northern lights guide for the conditions you need: dark, mostly clear skies.
Culture Night in Reykjavík
Menningarnótt, or Culture Night, is the big city festival of August. In 2026 it took place on 22 August from 12:00 to 22:00, with fireworks at Arnarhóll at 22:00. Streets in the center were mostly closed from 07:00 to 24:00, and there were earlier closures for setup and a marathon.
Plan accordingly if you stay in the city. Walk rather than drive, and ask your hotel how to reach it. Check the city's program for the current year, because the date moves. More about the capital on our Reykjavík page. The Hallgrímskirkja tower costs 1,500 ISK for adults and 200 ISK for ages 7 to 16, with no advance booking.

Puffins in August: go early
The window closes
Puffins usually leave the coast in mid or late August. There is no guarantee of a full August. The classic puffin boat from Reykjavík sails until 20 August and the premium trip until 15 August, each for about one hour. Choose a date in the first half of the month.
Whales instead
Whales and dolphins are seen near Reykjavík all year, so an August sailing remains a fine option after the puffins have gone. A classic trip takes about three hours.
Glacier lagoon
The Jökulsárlón boats run until November. Between June and September tours go from 09:00 to 19:00. See the Jökulsárlón page for 2026 prices and rules.
Roads, hours and bookings
Highland roads are subject to current opening status, as in every summer month. For Landmannalaugar the reservation window for arrivals between 09:00 and 16:00 ran until 13 September in 2026, and the highland bus until 20 September. Reserved parking does not prove that the road is open, so check road status on the day. Learn the rules on the road conditions page.
- The Blue Lagoon is open 07:00 to 23:00 until 20 August, then 08:00 to 22:00 from 21 August.
- On the Ring Road near Hornafjörður there has been a toll of 1,500 ISK per passage for vehicles under 3.5 t since 1 September 2026.
- Hotels were particularly full in July and August 2025. A lodging tax of 800 ISK per room and night applies, and 400 ISK for a campsite pitch.
